Why Natural? Is It Natural?

Picture yourself at the grocery store in the juice aisle. You see many bottles that all look like juice, it can actually be pretty hard to tell which ones are really juice. So you start reading the labels. Some will say 100% but there are many that contain high fructose corn syrup, sugar, and other ingredients with only about 10-30% actual juice. Which one do you feel better about drinking? Now think about the cosmetics and personal care products you use. Our skin is the largest organ of our body and highly absorbent. What do you want your skin drinking? Let’s compare the labels off of a natural, a “so called” natural and a conventional brand liquid foundation.

Real Purity Health Glo Crème Foundation:
Distilled Water, Vegetable Glycerin, Kaolin Clay, Rice Bran Oil and Iron Oxides

A “So Called” Natural Liquid Foundation (sold at Health Food Stores):
Purified water, titanium dioxide, glycerine, isopropyl palmitate (from palm wax), organic aloe vera gel, saccharide isomerate (natural sugar), organic sunflower oil, tea palmitate (from palm wax), kaolin, magnesium silicate ( a natural mineral), organic extracts of comfrey, chamomile, St. John’s wort, calendula, cetyl alcohol (emulsifier), lecithin, iron oxides, tocopherol 300iu vitamin E, retinyl palmitate 1250iu vitamin A, grapefruit seed extract, methylparaben, propylparaben.

A Conventional Liquid Foundation:
WATER, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, C12-15 ALKYL, OCTANOATE, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, ISONONYL ISONONANOATE, TALC, NYLON-12, OCTYLDODECYL NEOPENTANOATE, PEG-20 METHYL GLUCOSE SESQUISTEARATE, SILICA MICA, METHYL GLUCOSE SESQUISTEARATE, POLYSORBATE 20, STEARIC ACID, STEARDINYL UREA, TRIETHANOLAMIN, POLYACRYLAMIDE, XANTHAN GUM, C13-14 ISOPARRAFIN, TOCOPHERYL, ACETATE, LAURETH-7, METHYLPARABEN, PROPYLPARABEN, MAY CONTAIN TITANIUM DIOXIDE, IRON OXIDES

Quite a difference! The conventional foundation is full of all sorts of chemical ingredients. Looking at the "so called natural" you can see that not everything labeled natural, or even sold in a health food store really is. The last two ingredients are parabens. Parabens are synthetic chemical preservatives used in many cosmetics and body care products, even some sold as "organic" or "natural". They are listed under product ingredients as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, butylparaben and benzylparaben. Studies have shown that parabens have endocrine (hormone) disrupting effects. It's not just cosmetics that contain chemical ingredients and known carcinogens, but also bubble bath, hair products, lotion, deodorant, toothpaste and many other personal care products used by adults and children. The biggest surprise for many people will be reading the labels on the personal care and cosmetics sold at many health food stores. Here at Natural Joy we know that it can be very frustrating reading every label and trying to determine which ingredients are best avoided. That is why we will only carry those items that contain minimal ingredients and DO NOT contain Parabens, Sodium Lauryl/Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS), Phthalates, Petroleum, Mineral Oil, Artificial Colors, Synthetic Fragrances, Talc or other questionable ingredients and we always list the full ingredients for each product.
